SWN is a unique experience and the perfect way to bring you and your chosen group on an exclusive journey into the enchantment of nature at her most sublime and musical.

SWN holds back several nights from public sale during the short 7-week season to welcome private groups. Whether you are an organisation, a collective of professionals, a big family or just a group of friends we will be pleased to share the experience with you.

You and your group of up to 35 people are invited to step silently into the forest and, as night falls, listen to a remarkable duet between the sweet song of the Nightingale and some of the finest musicians in the land.  Join me, your host, Sam Lee, and a special guest musician on an unforgettable journey into nature to discover the story of this iconic and immortal bird.

Nightingale habitat includes blackthorn hedges and coppiced woodland

“Thank you so much for last week’s magical experience. I am so grateful to you, and the SWN team for welcoming us so warmly and guiding us through such a wonderful day. The team left the woodlands full of exuberance, joy and some very important new learnings.”

Caroline Galligan, AVIVA

This unique immersive experience is filled with fireside charm, exquisite food, drink, songs and stories, followed by an after-dark walk into the woods to meet the exceptionally rare Nightingale.

Once nestled in ear-tinglingly close range to our bird, we will create a concert like no other as the musicians join in an improvised duet with their virtuosic night-song.

The SWN team would love to welcome you to the Nightingale site and help design your perfect experience with us. There are many ways we can create a bespoke experience for you. Please see our On The Night page to get an idea of the program as a basis for how we can modulate your special event. Please see below for all the variations and enhancements we can make according to your needs, taste and budget so we can perfect the offering accordingly.

Additions & Enhancements

Many additions can be made to further the time spent in our Sussex idyll should you wish to extend earlier from the program or into the next day.

  • In the afternoon before the start of the SWN experience and across the morning after, we can offer your guests the opportunity to enjoy a selection of deeper immersions in the woods. We have facilitators who are experts in several skill sets that can provide sessions for everyone or just a smaller number of your party in the following experiences:

    • Forest Bathing, (shinrin-yoku)

    • Gong Bath meditation

    • Bird Watching in the valley

    • Facilitated group practices in nature connection

    • Group relationship-building games

    • Wilderness activities (including friction fire making, campfire cookery, herbal tinctures, foraging etc)

  • We work with several local and very excellent chefs who deliver exceptionally high-quality catering options. We always cook with local, organic ingredients, and with the huge variety of excellent biodynamic, organic and regenerative farms nearby the menu options are guaranteed to be delicious. We love consulting with our clients to ensure the meals offered are as honouring of the land as they are delicious to eat while bearing in mind any dietary requirements you have.

Our evening meal is usually served on plates around the campfire by the famous log cabin in true Singing with Nightingales style. We all enjoy the warmth and light of the fire and the timeless sense of entering into an older way. Dinner is eaten on laps maintaining the more rustic charm of our event. However, a table service arrangement can also be arranged for a more high-class affair.

A full wet weather contingency is always on hand with our delightful hand-made wood and canvas ‘huntsman’s shelters’. These are erected over the fire to offer waterproofing from any bad weather during the first parts of the evening. Once we leave the fire however guests are at the mercy of the quality of their waterproofs with help from our SWN umbrellas. See practical info on our Programme & Details page.

  • For all guests, we provide a diverse range of hot drinks, local craft beers, ciders, and wines. All our drinks come from suppliers we have gotten to know, most of whom are local and all of the highest quality. This can be made more specific for your requirements should that be necessary, and a more elaborate stocked ‘bar’.

We can offer a locally foraged herbal infusion and have offered mocktails with foraged ingredients in the past which make for a nice detail. Due to the nature of this being a sensory awareness experience, we do encourage our guests to drink moderately and avoid liquors and spirits on site (until they are back at the fire at the end of the event).

  • We work with some of the finest musicians in the business to accompany Sam and would be happy to recommend a suitable musician that would appeal to your group.

Artists that have wowed us in the past are Alice Zawadski, Abel Selacoe, Saied Silbak, and Anna Mudeka. We can supply links to these and several other artists for further listening. Please see our SWN Artists page to get an idea of the breadth of 45 or more players who work with us each year.

  • We can offer guests a few options for where they sleep the night of their visit. We can arrange for local hotel accommodation at Horsted Place Hotel, or continue the Nightingale experience and sleep in our luxury yurts or bell tents on site. This way guests can listen to the singing birds (in the distance) as they fall asleep and be greeted by the dawn chorus and the magic of our secret site in the morning (we also provide earplugs for those less keen on the dawn symphony). In all our on-site accommodation heating can be provided and turned on ahead of the guest’s return from the walk. Yurts and bell tents all come with double beds or twins, beautiful fabric interiors and a small space to sit and relax on chairs before bed.

For those choosing to stay over and awake in the woods and meadows the next day we will have tea, coffee, and breakfast available. Guests will also have use of our bespoke woodland hot showers we have constructed specifically for guests.

For those who don’t mind the night drive and prefer to wake in their own beds, leaving the site directly to home is also an option. Knowlands Farm to central London is a 1hr 40mins drive at that time of night.

Climate Reframe

In 2023 SWN welcomed Climate Reframe for an overnight retreat. Reframe supports the work of UK-based BIPOC professionals working in the climate space providing space for them to, amongst many things, experience nature. Over 35 ‘Reframers’ visited our site by coach to spend the day and night with us experiencing the SWN phenomenon. The woods and fireside dinner provided a unique and perfect space for deep discussions within the group about the role of access to nature. It enabled them to explore issues around identity, migration and safety for people of colour in the nature space. It was an adventure many of the group had never had the opportunity to experience and for some, the first time sleeping in a tent. The whole trip was covered by the Washington Post and published in a full-length feature. Some of the comments from the group are listed below. Thank you Climate Reframe!
